How Partner Compatibility Is Calculated (Synastry, Explained)
A partner horoscope is a small piece of synastry — the astrological practice of laying two birth charts side by side. When you enter two birth dates, we compute each person's actual sign-level chart (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) with the same orbital-element astronomy that powers our single readings, then compare the two charts angle by angle.
Two comparisons carry most of the weight. The Sun-to-Sun angle sets the baseline temperament match: signs of the same element (a trine) flow easily, signs two apart (a sextile) cooperate with a little effort, signs three apart (a square) generate friction that can either sharpen or exhaust a couple, and opposite signs attract precisely because they complete each other. The second axis is Venus and Mars — how each person loves versus how each person pursues — compared crosswise between the two charts.
An aspect is never a verdict. A square can be the most productive angle in a working relationship, and a trine can breed complacency; every geometric relationship has a high expression and a low one. Our reading names the pattern and describes both directions — what the friction builds when it is handled well, and what it costs when it is ignored.
Because the free comparison uses birth dates only, it stays at sign level: no houses, no composite angles, no claims that would need a birth time. Read it as a well-informed conversation starter about how two temperaments mesh — not as a score your relationship must live up to.
Element Compatibility at a Glance
The fastest synastry shortcut is the element pair. Find each Sun sign's element (Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius · Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn · Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius · Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), then read the pairing below.
| Fire | Earth | Air | Water | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Fire + Fire — instant ignition and mutual momentum. Passion and enthusiasm double; so do tempers. Someone has to mind the fuel. | Fire + Earth — the spark meets the hearth. Earth gives fire form and staying power; fire keeps earth from settling. Pace is the negotiation. | Fire + Air — air feeds flame: ideas become adventures fast. A naturally energizing match that must occasionally land, plan and follow through. | Fire + Water — steam or extinguished coals, depending on the dose. Passion meets feeling; each must learn the other's language for heat to become warmth. |

Pace is the negotiation. | Earth + Earth — two builders, shared foundations, slow and durable. Comfort is abundant; novelty is the scarce resource to budget deliberately. | Earth + Air — the planner meets the theorist. Air widens earth's horizon, earth grounds air's ideas — once they agree on what counts as progress. | Earth + Water — the garden pairing: water nourishes, earth contains. Deeply supportive and naturally domestic; watch for comfortable ruts. |

The pairing thinks beautifully; feelings and decisions need their own scheduled airtime. | Air + Water — the mind meets the tide. Each carries what the other lacks; translating between words and feelings is the couple's daily craft. |

Emotional weather is shared weather, so boundaries are an act of love. |
A Worked Example: Aries Meets Leo
Take two real dates: Person A born 25 March 1990, Person B born 1 August 1992. Our engine computes A as an Aries Sun with Venus and Mars in Aquarius, and B as a Leo Sun with Venus in Leo and Mars in Gemini.
The Sun-to-Sun angle is a Fire trine — Aries and Leo share an element, so baseline energy, honesty and pace match naturally. The cross-aspects add texture: A's Aquarius Venus trines B's Gemini Mars (an easy, talkative attraction), while B's Leo Venus opposes A's Aquarius Mars — the classic Leo–Aquarius polarity of personal warmth versus independent cool, which keeps the spark charged.
That is the whole method in miniature: real computed placements, a small set of named angles, and an interpretation that describes how the pattern tends to behave — the same steps your own comparison runs the moment you enter two dates.
